Backup Exchange 2010 SP1 on Windows 2008 R2 with Windows Backup

First install the Windows Server Backup Features using the Server Manager. Select both the Windows Server Backup and Command-line Tools. Now locate the “Microsoft Exchange Server Extension for Windows Server Backup” service and set the service to automatic and start it. Now we are ready to begin the backup process from the Windows Server Backup tool.

From Start > All Programs > Accessories  > System Tools select Windows Server Backup. In the MMC that opens on the right-hand side select “Backup Schedule…” in the Actions menu, this will open a wizard.

Press [Next >], Select Custom and press [Next >], select [Add Items] and select the folder in which your Information Store is stored. By default this is on your C drive in C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Mailbox.

Note: If at all possible I -highly- recommend moving the Information Store and your Log files to a seperate (virtual) disk. This will improve performance greatly.

Press [Next >] and configure when and where to store the backup.

Note: Backups made in this manner cannot be stored on network shares and must be made locally.
